Senior Story-Zane Fulmer

My name is Zane Fulmer and I started attending New Covenant School in the 9th grade as a part-time student. I have been a part-time student up until this year, my senior year, where I am now full time. The reason I came to New Covenant at the start of my high school career is because I wanted to play sports, but little did I know I would get so much more out of coming here, like a fantastic education, a bunch of new friends, and great relationships with my teachers. My favorite thing about New Covenant is that students and teachers have a great rapport. The reason I came to New Covenant was because of the sports and that’s really it. I didn’t have much interest in anything else about the school. After four years, I would still say I love basketball and cross country and I love them a lot more than I did, but something I unexpectedly found when I came here is that the teachers have an actual caring for you and there’s a great relationship between students and teachers. Now what I mean by relationships with the students is a relationship outside the classroom like at lunch, recess, or just walking down the halls. My best example is when everyone was at recess one day and I was shooting the basketball and my ball rolled toward Mr. Barton who was waiting in line for four square. He picked up my ball and before he could pass it back to me, I told him to shoot and if he made it he would have to come to my next basketball game. He ended up missing and when I came back over to tell him he still had to come to my next game our conversation quickly ended up switching to what colleges I was thinking about, how I did on the SAT, and my future. Then we both went back to our separate games. Another example of how the relationships between students and teachers being so great is a little less nice. I was called into Mr VanFossen’s office for misbehaving. We had a talk about how that wasn’t going to be acceptable, but as we were talking he told me he wasn’t getting onto me to be a jerk and he wasn’t going to email my parents, but he was getting on to me because he saw that I could do better and should do better. He had no interest in punishing me just to punish me. He wanted to see improvements. I took that to heart. I can say I have yet to be back to his office, but, don’t worry, there’s still a semester left. I have enjoyed my time at New Covenant and the memories I have made with friends and it will be hard to adjust to not being here anymore, but I know God has something great for me in store and I will be leaving New Covenant with a fantastic education, some great friends, amazing life advice, and unique relationships with my teachers.
