New Covenant has been having a very successful second cross country season. The boys' and the girls' teams, both under the direction of Coach Joe Canney, have competed in a variety of large meets including the Eye Opener Invitational, the Hurricane Invite, the Domino's Invitational, and the Palmetto Invitational. At these meets, New Covenant has raced against some of the largest and fastest programs in the state and region.

This year's girls' team is made up of a mix of returning runners from last year's team such as Leila Sconyers, Caroline Lamb, Wren Sconyers, and Carrigan Hovey. The team has also been strengthened with the arrival of new runners such as Anna Nelson, Macy McGahey, Gracie Cutliff, Bella Jordan, and Rylee Hawkins.

The most exciting new runner for the girls has been Layla Wickiser. Though only a 6th grader and having never run competitively, Layla has been the Lady Cavaliers' top runner this season. She has already broke the school record by an amazing two minutes and has established herself as a top runner in the SCACS division with a blistering 24:10 personal best for the 5K.

The boys' team this year is also a mix of returning runners from last year and new athletes to the team. The top returners are Elliott Wright, Gabe Miller, Ethan Varghese, Ethan Wright, and Ian McCall. That group has been greatly bolstered by the addition of Houston Funk, Evan Hamilton, Alyosha Truman, Alex Gebing, Jacob Valentine, Ben Matthews, Mike Albanese, and Caleb Gurley.

This year's boys team is one of the deepest and strongest as the top 5 runners have consistently finished within sixty seconds of each other and have all run under 21 minutes, while an additional 5 runners have run under 26 minutes.

Both teams will be traveling to Fort Mill on Saturday, October 14th to race in the SCACS State Championship Meet. The teams are seeking to run fast, race hard, have fun, and glorify the Lord!
