JV Boys Basketball - STATE CHAMPS!
The New Covenant Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team recently claimed its first State Championship by defeating Union Christian Day School in the championship game.
"Well, it has been a roller coaster of a season," said coach Dave Truman after the championship. "So if you would have told me it was going to end like this I doubt I would have believed you." When asked to elaborate Coach added, "Well, this team has the widest gap in age, grade, and even size that New Covenant boys have ever had, so at times we have had three 6th graders on the floor and at other times three or more 9th and 10th graders in the game. So the range has been so wide spread it has been hard to develop continuity. However, everything came together at the end of the season and I could not be more proud of our guys."
The JV tournament got started with a lackluster first round game against Victory with the team only scoring 23 total points. However, defense won the day by only allowing a mere 16. Weston Nyagah led the team with 9 points while the twin towers of Aiden Graves and Ben Mathews each put up 5 points.
With the win the JV boys advanced to the Final Four where they faced Tabernacle Christian. Only three weeks earlier Tabernacle handed the New Cov JV boys back to back losses. First by a score of 34 to 24 and then a spanking of 54 to 18 two days later. With these loses fresh on their minds, the JV Cavs played their best game of the season to win a hard fought battle 42-39. Zeke Gibson led the team with 17 points including two key three pointers in the fourth quarter along with sinking two free throws to help seal the win. Ben Mathews, Aiden Graves, and Weston Nyagah dominated the rebounding and combined for 21 points.
In the championship game again Union Christian Day School, the JV boys started energized. The JV Cavs came out with a press, shutting down Union's offense and holding them to a mere 7 points per quarter average and their leading scorer to only 4 points for the game. In a full court press for the entire game, Arjay Moore led the team in scoring with 9 points, 6 of those from steals. Filling their role as post players and big men, Aiden Graves and Ben Mathews once again dominated underneath with 8 and 7 points respectively. Zeke Gibson put up 7 points and was the key to making the big men a credible threat with a bunch of assists. 7th grade guard Ben Bradshaw also took on the role of ball handler to protect the 10 point lead in the final minute when the bench was put into the game.
Coach Truman further commented, "I am super proud of these boys. They played through adversity all season. They stuck together and were really inspired by our varsity boys. You could tell they wanted to bring home their own trophy." And sure enough they did!
The future looks bright for the New Covenant boys basketball program! Congrats JV Boys on a great season and a State Championship!
