Joe Canney was hired to be New Covenant School’s fourth Headmaster in the summer of 2012.  Joe was raised in the great state of Ohio where he was taught to love the Lord, baseball, the Buckeyes and Cincinnati style chili. After graduating a Roughrider from West Jefferson High School, Joe moved to northeast Ohio to study Elementary Education at Malone University, where he also had the privilege of playing baseball as a Pioneer for four seasons.  (Joe happily recounts that his freshman year he was the worst player on the worst team in the league.)

After graduating cum laude from Malone, Joe taught four years of fourth grade in Canton, Ohio.  Upon his marriage to Melissa in 2004, the happy couple moved to North Carolina for two years where Joe taught fifth grade and Melissa third.  In the summer of 2006, Joe and Melissa relocated to Melissa’s home state of New Jersey to help start Bethel Prep, a classical and Christian school.  While at Bethel Prep, Joe wore many hats as he helped to start a school from scratch.  He taught from first to eleventh grades while serving as assistant Headmaster and Athletic Director.  Joe also founded a track team that was Bethel Prep’s most successful athletic program and involved over half the total students in the school.

Since arriving at New Covenant, Joe has helped the school grow from 125 students to over 220. He has sought to improve every area of the school by closely examining and evaluating the curriculum and teaching methods. He has also overseen the addition of varsity boys and girls basketball teams, along with a cross country team. Under his tenure the school has become a member of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools (SCACS) which provides many opportunities for the school and its students.

Joe and Melissa have four beautiful daughters, Addison, Emerson, Ellody and Annabelle, along with a rather dapper son, Sullivan.  In addition to spending time with his family, Joe enjoys reading and running, just not at the same time.
