2020-2021 CAVALIER BOYS VARSITY SEASON RECAP

The Varsity Boys Basketball Team completed a very successful season with a record of 14-5.  They were 12-4 in the regular season sporting a 11-3 region record which was good for second place in the Piedmont Region.  They qualified for the State Tournament in Columbia and made it to the championship game for the fifth straight year where they lost a tough battle to Easley Christian in the State Final.

The team was led on offense all season by Miles Miller, Ethan Varghese and Aiden Graves.  On the defensive side of the ball the Cavaliers were led by Zeke Gibson, Braden Sult and Will Hardy.  Ben Mathews, Matthew Harmon, Ethan Simpson and Zane Fulmer made significant contributions at different times during the season on both sides of the ball.

At the start of the season, I was concerned we would be shorthanded with only seven returning players, so I offered some Varsity spots to some JV up and comers to help round out the roster.  As it turned out, we were blessed with the return of two former students and the addition of a couple new student athletes to the program so that we ended up having the largest Varsity squad in program history.

I thought the boys did a tremendous job of jelling as a unit by putting aside egos and pursuing team goals and success above personal goals and desires.  It was not without some growing pains, but they managed to come together to accomplish some important milestones in the season that set them up to get to Columbia again.

I cannot say enough about our Seniors.  We will graduate more Seniors off this team than any previous season with six moving on to college this Spring.  Ben Mathews, Will Hardy and Miles Miller served as Senior Captains this season and led the team with distinction.  Ethan Simpson, Matthew Harmon and Zeke Gibson led well in their own right as upperclassmen.

Our young call ups from JV played very well in limited minutes, and it has been noted by others that their participation in Varsity practices and games has already had a big impact in maturing and seasoning them for the task of taking on full Varsity status next year.

It was a privilege to coach this group and be party to their successes, challenges and their growth as young men through it all.
