The New Covenant Lady Cavaliers recently completed another outstanding season. The team capped off the 2020-2021 campaign with a 15-3 overall record, their fifth consecutive Piedmont Region Championship (8-0) and a runner-up finish at the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools 1A State Tournament. Considering there was concern if there would even be a season, every game was considered a blessing especially for the three seniors who were on the team.

The season was an exciting one as the Lady Cavs torched the nets like never before. In the second season of using “The System”, the team set a record for points per game with 54.8 as they had three of the top five highest scoring games in program history including scoring 70 or more twice which had only ever been done once before. Additionally, the Lady Cavs ripped down 60 or more rebounds in four games including a school record 72 rebounds in a game against their rival, Lighthouse. The team also tied records for assists in a game (20) and three pointers made in a game (11).

The Lady Cavs were led this year by their senior players, Wren Sconyers and Olivia Milford, along with senior statistician Rachel Lopez. The Lady Cav class of 2021 leaves as the most decorated class in school history. They won four consecutive 1A Region Championships including an eye opening 30-0 region record during their high school years and won the SCACS 1A State Championship in 2018. Wren Sconyers leaves the program with the record for most points in a game (29) and as the second all time leading scorer and rebounder with 588 points and 535 rebounds. Additionally, Wren concludes her career as the all time leader in field goal percentage (37.0%) and blocked shots (69). Not to be out done, Olivia Milford ended her career as the school’s best three point shooter with the most made threes in a career (67) and season (39). Olivia’s name is littered throughout the record book as the fifth all time leading scorer (402), fourth in rebounds (284), second in assists (145), third in steals (155), and she has the eighth highest total points in a game with 18. Senior Rachel Lopez has been the team’s statistician for the last four seasons, making all the record breaking possible. But even more than stats, Rachel grew to be an important part of the coaching staff as she provided valuable information game in and game out.

The Lady Cavs were also led by junior Captain Lily Wickiser who averaged a school record 16.9 points per game to go along with 12.1 rebounds per game. Lily ends her junior season as the Lady Cavs all time leading scorer (812 points) and rebounder (730). Another key contributor for the Lady Cavs was junior point guard Ella Milford as she led the team in assists (67) and steals (67) for the season.

The team had eight underclassmen who all had important roles for the team this season and will be vital for the program to continue its success. There were three sophomores on the team. Emma Jordan continued to improve her game with hard work including making over 1000 threes in practice. Madline McClure was an essential part of the team as she provided outstanding post defense and began to become an offensive threat. Sophomore Zhenya Truman continues to be a threat from deep which helps to create space for the offense to attack.

For the freshmen, Hadley Johnson assumed a more vital role for the team as she pulled down 108 rebounds for the season (11th best in school history) and averaged 3.7 points per game. Filling an important role for the team this year was Lauren Landis as she filled the five spot for the team. Lauren has a great basketball IQ that allowed her to be consistently right where the team needed her to be. Lastly for the freshman class was Bella Jordan, an outstanding athlete who can create offense, wreak havoc on defense, and knock down important three point shots.

There were two key contributors from the eight grade in Virginia Wickiser and Addison Canney. Virginia continues to show herself to be an athlete with great potential for the Lady Cavs as she knocked down 8 three pointers, grabbed 14 steals, and handed out 14 assists. Addison filled a crucial role as she became a point guard alongside Ella Milford. Addison had a great season as she averaged 5.8 points per game and had 54 steals including 10 in one game which tied the school record for most steals in a game. Additionally, Addison handed out 40 assists and sent home 14 three pointers.

It was a great season for the Lady Cavs. While the future looks bright, the program cannot be more proud of its current accomplishments and the accomplishments of the seniors, Wren, Olivia, and Rachel!
